Safety

The Club Safety Advisor is Robert Dunne .  Robert is also the Rowing Ireland Coastal Safety Advisor and is a member of the Rowing Ireland Safety Advisory Committee, which develops safety Programmes and inisitives for all types of rowing under Rowing Irelands governance such as Flat water, Coastal and Para rowing.

Wicklow Rowing Club takes safety very seriously.All members new and existing will receive a safety induction which shall give them an understanding of what risks and hazards they may face and will be advised of the mitigation required to eliminate or greatly reduce these hazards .  These risks and actions required are comprehensivly listed in the clubs safety statement which can be found on this websites policy page.

The main safety rules that apply are as follows;

All Coxes must wear life jackets (PFDs) while in any club boat be it in training or in competition.

All under 16 junior members must wear an appropriate PFD while on the water for training or competion .

Note there is an exemption to this rule for under16 in Offshore only when competing in Rowing Ireland sanctioned competitions.

Always be on the look out for swimmers they may appear in front of you when you least expect it. Most will wear a bright cap or tow a float but not all will as there are a considerable amount of open sea swimmwers up along the course that stretches from the North pier up as far as the old office blocks adjacent to the Morrough playground.  When leaving or returning to the beach always ensure that you steer out around the raft in the harbour never row between the pier and the raft. This is for the safety of the swimmers as there is high activity in this area especially during the summer.

On the water training alone or outside normal training times ; Members should inform the DPA ( Designated person Ashore) of their planned route and estimated time of return . A Vhf radio should be also carried . There are a number available in the club house in the club room.

Novice or inexperienced rowers should always avoid going south near Wicklow Head as there are constant strong tides present .

All safety issues or near misses must be reported to the safety advisor who will inturn register it on the Rowing Ireland safety portal IROWsafe.
